Miss A First Communion {Overland Park First Communion Photographer}

April 09, 2014  •  Leave a Comment

It was a sunny but windy day when I met up with Miss A and her mom for her First Communion portrait session at our church, Church of the Ascension in Overland Park, KS.  What I remember first about our session was how Miss A took my breath away when she walked into the Gathering Area.  Her dress fit her perfectly (I mean to a "T"!), as if it were tailor-made just for her.  And with her dark curls falling gently on her shoulders she was a true vision of grace and beauty.

I have to say I am so in love with how easy it is to photograph these beautiful young ladies.  Is it something about the age, or am I just blessed to have such amazing models to work with this year?  Miss A brought out her most beautiful smiles, and being a ballet dancer, she naturally knew how to pose her feet and hands (which can be really awkward to do!).  She made my job so easy!

I had some challenges with the lighting (it was very dark) and the color (the walls of our church are a dark mustard yellow), but Miss A and her mom were so patient with me as I made change after change to my equipment during each pose.  We used most of the church, and captured great images by the alter, the statue of Mary, a stained glass window, and praying in a pew.  And of course we took advantage of the beautiful afternoon natural light pouring in from the windows in the Gathering Area.  But their patience and my determination were rewarded, because we captured some of the most beautiful images of Miss A to commemorate this most precious and special time in her faith journey.

Thanks Miss A for being so cooperative and such a good listener!  I hope your First Communion always holds a special place in your heart, as I know it will for your mom and dad.

Miss M First Communion {Kansas City First Communion Photographer}

The first thing I remembered as I pulled into the Sacred Heart Catholic Church parking lot for Miss M's First Communion photography session was "The last time I was here was for her baptism 8 years ago!"  Miss M's parents have been my friends for about 12 years now, and in fact my husband and Miss M's dad have been friends since they were little boys.  So it gave me great honor to take her portraits to commemorate her First Holy Communion.

The church had wonderful natural light pouring in from the windows, and though decorated bare in the tradition of Lent, still had many wonderful little spots for us to work in.  Miss M is a natural beauty, and although she refused to give me any full-on, teeth-baring smiles despite my prodding and pleading (is that an 8 year old thing?), she knew exactly how to pose for each photo and took direction like a pro.

Thanks Miss M for always being such a beautiful subject, and thanks to her mom and dad for allowing me to be a small part of this special occasion for your family!  The photos and especially the memory box will be treasures she will cherish forever.
